Artist Spotlight: Morgan Beem! The Death and Rebirth of Cloudia!
Behind the Scenes: Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland
Stupid Fresh Mess editorial background character, Joel Enos, here to share some beautiful artwork from the writer/artist of Untold Tales of I Hate Fairyland # 5, Morgan Beem!
The real reward of being an editor, on the best days of the job, is when an artist or writer (in this case both)…is incredible…and…does something amazing.
The other best part of this gig is that editors also get to see everything. From start to finish. And for this project, where other creators get to step into the world Skottie created for I Hate Fairyland, it’s all a lot of fun at every stage of the work.
When comics are coming from artists and writers this good…they are good from Day 1.
When Morgan sent over her initial ideas for her Untold Tales short (hopefully the first, not the only!), we all just were like…
Yes.
AND THEN THE ART STARTED TO COME IN!
I mean…
That was EARLY COLOR ONLY for Page 1.
So yeah, sure, we can work with that. (Trying to be nonchalant…inside being like…I have no reason to even do my job here, I love this! Look at the skeleton!)
PROCESS WORK!
Morgan was kind enough to share some of her process with us. So we could see where she started and ended up. It’s about as behind-the-scenes as it gets, and is quite lovely to see how things came together.
Of course, for those of you who have already read the story that we published two weeks ago, you know Cloudia is nottttt in a good mood. And long time readers of Skottie’s I Hate Fairyland know why…
(And if you haven’t read Morgan’s story yet, you need to. Click below to read now!)
UNTOLD TALES BEHIND THE SCENES
I get to see so much great art (and read good stories) as these Untold Tales come together. I was thinking it would be a shame for me not to share some of the pieces that you all never get to see!
So in the weeks to come, as we get more creepy, strange, fun and bizarre takes on I Hate Fairyland from some stellar creators, I’ll start dropping in some behind-the-scenes art — and doing more spotlights on our friends and collaborators, the writers and illustrators helping us bring Gert back to the world (whether she wants to be brought back or not!).
POTENTIAL FOR MORE UNTOLD TALES FROM MORGAN!
If you’re loving Morgan’s work as much as we are, let us know. We’re going to try to get her to do at least one more story!
Until next time!
