I think Middlewest is one of the most underrated and highly relatable stories when you figure out how the emotions can attach to you. I would put it on the same level as Craig Thompson's Blankets.

I look forward to Boy at the End, I have a gut feeling it is going to be an eye-opening amazement that also shreds the heartstrings like an Anthrax/Public Enemy Fight the Power mashup.
Ooh always love an in-depth Skottie post! I honestly really love your response to this! The way of looking at it as your place in the process of collaborating with others. And that currently it's more fun to be the kickoff! As Anakin put it "This is where the fun begins!"
As a consumer I'd apply the same question and give a similar response. I love it all! I was of course bumbed when we found out you wouldn't be doing interiors for I Hate Fairyland. But then Brett came along and blew us all away making me a day one lifelong fan of his! Then the same thing happened with Jorge! And Nate, JFB Jay, etc.
Your ability to assemble of team of kick-ass awesome people is what keeps me coming back. Whether your involvement is more on the writing side of things or the visual side of things.
But there's also the part where you can feel the excitement with every project you're on because you're getting to explore a lot more in a lot less time. And that comes through both in the writing and the artists collaborating with you as they're just as excited!
Your answer is in lockstep with the late, great Charles Schulz. In his biography he explained it would've been easier to have others do the drawing, but wouldn't allow it since the drawing was how he kept loving the work.
I truly love these types of newsletters where we get a more in-depth open hearted insight into your thoughts and process. I would agree with a few people as well as say this was a perfectly answered and loved the response here. The way you get to expand beyond the sandbox and truly be creative vs being condemned to the parameters of abc.. the ability to collaborate with others, gain inspiration and bounce off ideas to make the final product, better in some ways beyond what you thought possible. I wouldnt say I'm surprised by your response here as it is something we've all come to know you're truly passionate about over the years, yes your art is amazing(duh) but I feel your writing talent is fantastic and the stories and characters you bring to life is what is truly special. Love this, as much as I love your art, I'm more or a story guy myself. Ain't no grave has been my favorite thing you've written so far, especially #4. Followed by The me you love in the dark. I think the story is always better when it comes from an artist, Jeff Lemire is another example that comes to mind, Fell in love with Fish Flies.
This is so cool to hear. My takeaway is do what you love, but know WHY you do what you love. I'm sure there were many times you felt uncertain but pushed past it because you knew what you wanted to do and not to move toward that.
As a budding comic artist looking to get into this industry, I wish I knew what I was looking for specifically besides just wanting to get paid to draw things haha. If I had a million bucks I know I'd just create my own comic series and work on it till I'm dead, but I can't do that because money is a thing. So I've gotta figure out other paths to hopefully get there eventually.
