DIGGING IN THE CRATES
I’ve been combing through my bookshelves, files, hard drives and anything else I can find to share from over the last twenty years of my career as an cartoonist. I was happy to find a few of my long out of print sketchbooks.
Both of them (STUFF AND JUNK ONE) are from 2010, which is without a doubt the most important period of learning and growth as an artist I experienced since I started drawing. If you subscribe to the 10,000 Hours theory from Malcom Gladwell’s OUTLIERS, 2010 would be about when I hit that mark and I could feel it. I was no longer trying to draw like someone else or in any certain style. I was just drawing. I was no longer scared of pushing, exploring, reaching beyond what is “correct” or “comic book.” I was just free styling.
These two sketchbooks collect some of those studies and experiments from the midpoint of my journey to discover who I was as a cartoonist. Even now, I look back and tell myself I need to rediscover some of the boldness and fearlessness I found myself applying to every drawing I did during those years.
As a thank you to all of the subscribers that have signed up since we launched the STUPID FRESH MESS SubStack, I’d like to gift every subscriber with a free downloadable copy of STUFF! This is a 50 page out of print sketchbook!
If you like that, then I suggest you jump in on a premium subscription for even more free stuff. You can already download DAILY GRIND, the 100 page digital collection of the first few years of my Daily Sketches. Soon I’ll offer JUNK ONE, the other out of print sketchbook I mentioned above. That is a 100 page book collection of even more of my 2010 explorations and studies!
And don’t forget the upcoming I HATE FAIRYLAND original short stories that are just around the corner! I have some great storytellers lined up and the first few are gonna have you laughing your fucking asses off! Those will be available to all premium subscribers!
THE ME YOU LOVE IN THE DARK #2
The latest issue of me and Jorge Corona’s new comic is on shelves today at your LOCAL COMIC SHOP or wherever comics are sold! The first issue sold out and went back for a second printing and will be available today as well! Don’t miss out on this book.
I know I have STUFF but can’t remember if I ever got junk one. I can say that I have drawn inspo from that sketch book more than once specifically for my favorite holiday activity pumpkin carving. More recently I did a version of Gert too. Picked up Middlewest books last month along with The Me You Love in the Dark and will need to go get #2 now!
I still own both those books on my shelf as well as the sketchbook with a drawing of you holding a bomb on the cover! :) I also have the little book with your alien character
