Introducing UnORIGINAL ART!

Details on our new line of prints!

What’s up everyone! I’m very excited to announce the new line of prints we’re dropping called UnORIGINAL ART!

When I was coming up as a young cartoonist, I always wanted to be able to look at an actual raw page of comic art from my favorite artists. Looking at the finished art in a comic is great, but seeing it at the size it was drawn and noticing brush strokes, white out, and blue lines underneath is like watching the special features for a movie. You get a peek behind the curtain at the how the art was made. There was one problem. I was a young cartoonist and couldn’t afford to buy original art.

Flash forward a number of years and we were all introduced to the ARTIST EDTIONS! These are books printing raw scans of comics and collections of art from some of the legendary cartoonists in our medium. The best part is they’re published at the size they were drawn. You are basically holding a version of the actual original art. Except…NOT. They are some of my favorite books in my library and I’ve learned so much about making comics because of them.

One day here at Stupid Fresh Mess WHQ, we were having coffee and talking about potential new products to offer you all, our Shipping Master John suggested making a limited run of signed and numbered prints featuring raw scans of some of our favorite covers. An ARTIST EDTION Print of sorts. Megan lit up instantly and it took me a whole 8 seconds to shout “FUCK YES! We can call it UnOriginal Art!”

The idea is the same as above. It’s a way for you all to be able to own and hold a print that LOOKS like piece of original art without having to pay the original art price. We tested tons of paper to make sure that it not only looks like original art, but it FEELS like it too!

We got to work picking out our favorites for the launch, setting them up with an original blue line comic board template and getting the printer fired up! A few weeks later, our newest Stupid Fresh Mess member Lassie hand numbered over 1000 prints and now it’s on me to sign them all!

Here’s the thing, these look so F***ING real that we had to put a disclaimer on the page template. Of course we wanted to inject a little humor.

“IF YOU PAY ANYONE ORIGINAL ART PRICES FOR UNORIGINAL ART, I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO TELL YOU. YOU GOT DOOPED.”

Yeah, yeah. I misspelled DUPED. Calm down Professors. We discussed it and thought it was funnier this way. And because most people will assume that I know how to spell DUPED and trust me when they read DOOPED. We got this under control.

The point is, these are PRINTS and NOT original art, even if they look like it. It’s just a way for us to offer you something a little different than you’re used to. The 20 year old Me would have LOVED these.

We’re back at L.A. Comic Con! Skottie and the WHOLE Stupid Fresh Mess team including Megan and John will be at the table December 1-3 to meet your faces! We’ll have more details as we get closer so stay tuned.
