March MADness!
Run down of the craziness of this month
March is always a whirl wind of life and work around the Stupid Fresh Mess studio. There’s Spring Break for each of our families, my birthday, Megan’s daughters birthday, conventions, regular weekly covers/scripts/SFM exclusive deadlines and this year the release of my newest ongoing DC comics LOBO #1!!! When I tell you this month has been insane, it’s a wild understatement.
We always kick off March with my Birthday, and as a gift to lead me into my 48th year on this rock…I got a big ol’ cold! Yup, that’s right, I spent the first few weeks sick! I had just gotten back from a trip to LA for some meetings at DC and and a certain someone had a cold and was kind enough to let me have it for a bit. I won’t tell you who it was. But his name rhymes with JIM LEE! I’ll forgive him because he took us artists to a great lunch and we got Lobo sales numbers while I was there so things were still just peachy!
I held onto that gift well into the first few days spring break vacation in Costa Rica, which also happened to line up with the week that LOBO #1 hit the shelves. I spent one of the days on the beach reading all the comments and reviews and man, you all really made my day. It was nothing but love for what Me, Jorge, Jean, Nate and the rest of the crew put into the launch of Lobo’s first ongoing in over 10 years.
Speaking of Lobo and my awesome March cold, you can hear my nasally yapping with the amazing David Harper on his Off Panel Podcast. Props to him for taking the time to edit out my non stop coughing while we talk about the Lobo, Stupid Fresh Mess and all the other stuff!
And just last night I went live with Alex and Justin over on the Comic Book Club Podcast!
You can also check out me and Jorge talking Lobo and our work together over the years over on Spotify on the We Got Issue Podcast
After a week of vacation we all got back to the studio I had a whole 3 days to get 4 covers going and signed a few thousand Lobo comics for John and company to start shipping out before I had to run off to Planet Comic Con here in KC. Megan had the same amount of (almost) no time to get organized and packed for the convention on top of organizing a full 8 hour day of private signings. The Jenga of her job gives me fucking nightmares. Luckily she crushes it so hard that all I have to do is show up and scribble my name a few trillion times. In that 3 days I managed to get an AVENGERS: ARMAGEDDON cover done with my partner-in-color-crime Jean Francois Beaulieu, and a good way through something else we’ll be bring your way very soon.
And then there was PLANET! Planet Comic Con that is. We started the weekend off a day earlier than normal. Megan put together a full 8 hour day of private signings on Thursday. 5000 signatures to warm me up for the weekend of double that. I started each day off with coffee and Advil just to pre empt what was to come. As my kids put it, I was in full UNC zone. It was a great couple of days of meeting all of you who came to Planet, signing books and, you know, hanging with a few of my heroes.
Thank you so much to everyone that came out to support us! We love getting to meet everyone and I mostly enjoy signing 456,547,45-NINER comics! ha ha ha. As always, a big thank you for my Stupid Fresh Mess crew Megan, John, Skeff, and DJ for making weekends like this possible. I’ll never be able to really express how much it means to me that you all give so much of your time and love to what we do!

As soon as planet was over, we got some comps in the mail from DC that would check off another major box.
That’s right! I’m officially a member of The Usual Gang Of Idiots! I started reading Mad in 1986 and now I’ve been published in the pages of MAD! It’s out TODAY (no joke) in
Chip Zdarsky edited MAD About DC and invited me to be a part of it. I’m so happy he didn’t let me bail when my schedule was bursting at the seams and I was all “Fuck you, Chip! I can’t do it!” and and he was all like “Fuck you, Skottie…but also, PRETTY PLEASE DON’T BAIL!” and I was all like “Ok. I love you.” Check it out!
Megan put some signed copies up in the Shop and they sold out lickity split so we have some more on order! You can pick one up here…
And that’s what March was like. Now let’s see what April has for us!
See you in the funny pages.
