The Wrap Up
A rundown of the week that was
Hey all! A lot went down this week and I thought I’d put together a newsletter to collect it and share with you all.
BIRTHDAY BOY
Kicking things off, celebrated my son Baxter’s 16th birthday. I can’t believe I’m the dad of a 16 year old. I still feel 16 myself. Except for my knees, my back, my white beard, my inability to eat full large pizzas completely on my own, and several other things that remind me I’m definitely NOT 16.
DAILY SKETCHES
I’ve been wanting to get back in the habit of doing Daily Sketches but was finding it hard to get inspired. I’ve kept a massive list of characters suggestions but it just wasn’t working for me anymore. I watched everyone use the prompts for their InkTober drawings and thought maybe that would help shake my brain up. I found a list of 100 one word prompts and it really helped. So, for the first time in many years I did a sketch every day of the week and I couldn’t be happier about it! It’s been so fun to get back in the practice.
On top of getting back in the routine of Daily Sketches, I thought it would be fun to go back to posting them up for sale as soon as they’re live! That’s how so much of what would one day become Stupid Fresh Mess started! I’d post daily, sell the pieces daily and give everyone a reason to keep checking the site/IG/blog/store on the regular! And just like they did back then, the pieces are flying out of the store as soon as we hit post! You all are so awesome.
Here’s the week’s One Word Studies!
LOBO!
I had a great call with Jorge Corona and our DC editor about our Lobo series. I was excited before but now I’m just over the moon! We threw around a bunch of really fun and funny ideas to get the series going. I can’t share much yet, but I can give you peek at one of Jorge’s first takes on The Main Man!
Jorge and I are thrilled to be doing this together. We’ve made so many creator owned comics over the years but this will the first time we get to play with one of the big two’s toys together and we are gonna have more fun than you all are ready for!
If you’re new to the newsletter or even my work and want to check out the books Jorge and I have done together stop by my site and grab some of the collections!
SIGNING, SIGNING, AND MORE SIGNING
It wouldn’t be a normal week if I didn’t spend a considerable amount of time a the signing table with Megan and a bundle of makers scribbling my name on a few hundred comics. This week’s main stacks were Youngblood and Fantastic Four, both hit shelves on Wednesday. the Fantastic Four cover was the last one in connection 5 covers.
WHATCHA WATCHING?
I blazed through season 2 of Peacemaker and loved it.
Watched the new John Candy Doc I Like Me. It was ok. I learned some new stuff but didn’t seem to warrant an entire documentary. Or a lot was left out to keep it from going too heavy or dark. Glad I watched it but it won’t be in rotation.
Rewatched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button for the first time in many years. Maybe since it came out. I didn’t fall in love with it when I first saw it but man, it hit me hard this time around. I really loved it. I was so up in my feelings from start to finish. David Fincher is one of my favorites.
I’ve been in a big rewatch zone lately and decided to press play on The Green Mile. Again, I haven’t seen this since the theater the year it came out. Another movie I didn’t love when I saw in it my early 20’s but now…it’s amazing. I love what aging can do to how you enjoy or don’t enjoy art.
Also, RIP to the movie poster master Drew Struzan. We lost one of the greats.
Ended the week watching Being Eddie Murphy. Another okay doc. Not sure how much I learned but I can’t deny how magnetic Eddie Murphy is. He’s been a staple in my life and it was nice to watch a few hour review of his life and career. I used to listen to his standup specials on cassette tapes in elementary school. But, only in my headphones because I didn’t want my parents taking my tapes away!
Also, this guy does not age. It’s insane. He’s definitely a vampire.
THAT’S A WRAP
Well, there you have it. A week in the life of me. I’m going to try and do a weekly wrap up on the regular. It might be Friday, might be Saturday, but i’ll try to keep it up. It’s fun to share the week in a journal style way.
Oh, and we also dropped some stickers this week and Megan has some info on that below!
Talk to you all next week!

Man, what a wrapup indeed! First off a very happy belated birthday to Baxter! Man, 16 now so that means he can have a license! Second off I'm not sure if you're aware of this Skottie but uh, you're a busy guy! I commend you for being able to keep up with it all!
I mentioned it before but it's been such a blast watching you sketch daily with the one word prompts! You can tell how jazzed it's got you feeling and they've been so fun to see drop both on socials and in the shop. Congrats on the first week and here's to many more!
That Lobo piece from Jorge has got me so pumped for the series visually! And of course all of you're previous works I'm very familiar with has me pumped for the story. So I'm mostly excited to see what all the hype about this character is I know nothing about hah!
Lastly, very fun to see what all you're ingesting! Peacemaker season 2 like you said was so damn good! The John Candy doc was on my list but I might hold off. I've been wanting to rewatch Benjamin Button as well so might as well add Green Mile! Such great films and like you said our opinion on them can change with age. Which I really love! Also, rest in piece to one of the greats Drew Struzan. Whose posters were truly magical.
It is always an enjoyable read when I open these newsletters in any and all capacity. First off I'd like to wish Baxter a Happy birthday! Always exciting to get teasers abd tidbits of info on all the new or upcoming projects, im anticipating Lobo to be another successful run with you and Jorge together again. As previously mentioned on other comments and posts im so happy to see the daily sketches back in any capacity and love the prompt list you've chosen, seriously though the possibilities are endless where you can take them with your creativity. I was shocked with the surprise sticker drop yesterday but you already know I grabbed a bunch shortly after the went live haha, I cant wait for those to arrive too. I do enjoy and appreciate your comfortability, vulnerability and willingness to open up to us fans within your writing of these newsletters between personal, professional and just any aspect you give us insights to. As always to Skottie, Megan, John and the entire SFM team thank you for everything you all do, day in and out for everyone, I truly appreciate everything. Have a great weekend!
