The Wrap Up: Linus, An Auction and Toys For Tots
A story about redrawing a daily sketch a rundown of randomness
What’s up everyone! I’m back with a Friday Wrap Up. A lot has been going down the last few weeks. Seem like Thanksgiving was a million years ago already and I fcan’t believe Christmas is right around the corner.
Let’s get things kicked off with Daily Sketches and a peek behind the curtain. I’ve been using a list of one word prompts to keep me inspired and on task. The word BLANKET came up and I instantly knew I was going to draw Linus from The Peanuts. My youngest son was actually going to be named Linus until 3 months before he was born. Changed it last minute but I still love that name. For some reason I love the idea of aged comic strip and cartoon characters. Like where are these child stars now. So I worked up my version of Linus. I sketched this on my iPad and then printed it out to ink it.
I decided to try and ink it with a new fountain pen I just got. It’s the same kind of pen Sergio Aragones used to ink GROO. Schulz used a nib or fountain pen as well so I thought this would be a perfect piece to practice it on.
Well, guess what? I hated it. Hahaha. I liked the idea but it just felt very NOT ME. I could see my idea there but the lines lacked the alive nature that I’m used to. It was a fun experiment but I decided to print it out again and attack with my brush like normal.
And just like that all was right in the world again. Here’s the two side by side. I’m not saying the pen was is BAD, it’s just different.
Next up, we have a really cool auction going on at SkottieYoung.com right now. Back in 2019 Marvel did a direct to consumer drop called Marvel Made and the first one was all me baby! It was an exclusive enamel pin set, a journal, a few exclusive comics and packaged in a full blown Skottie Young art box! We have a few laying around the studio and Megan NOT SO SUBTLY leaves one of the boxes out on the main studio desk next to 30 or 40 Pocsa paint markers and is all like “If you feel like drawing on this, you can.” So I did and now it’s up for auction at my site!
Last week we told you all that all precedes from one of my Daily Sketches would go to Toys for Tots so we made a Stupid Fresh Mess of the toy isles in Kansas City and took them to the the local drop off site! And no, we didn’t plan the whole RED SHIRT situation, but we weren’t mad at it.
This coming Monday is the Final Order Cutoff for I Hate Fairyland #47. Incase you didn’t know, I’m back on covers for the monthly ongoing I Hate Fairyland. I’ll be the C cover each month! Go tell your retailer you want the next issue. Written by me, drawing by the amazing Derek Laufman, colors by Jean-Francois Bealieu and with letters by Nate Piekos. I’d also like to shout out our editor Eric Harburn. This man makes making comics so much easier for me and my crew. He’s an amazing talent with a brilliant mind and really helps make us make the best comics possible.
Ok, let’s wrap this newsletter up with the official announcement that we’ll be returning to our local convention PLANET COMICON! See you all in March!
That’s all I got for you all. I’m spent. I’m done. I’m OUTTIE 5000!

If you ever want to get rid of that pesky pen, let me know ;) I promise I’ll give it a good home.
omg. KC. So close. We’ve never been to a con, but you’re my FAVE. My 11 year old would kill for the experience! Going to read up on deets and hopefully see you live in person!! Whoa!
