SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER
Summer is in full swing here at Stupid Fresh Mess and the McYoung household. (My wife is Casey McCauley and our friends refer to us as The McYoung’s. Cute, right? Yup, moving on.) They let school out a week early, since we didn’t use that many snow days this year, which meant that all the fun end-of-school events were crammed into a few days instead of two weeks. That kept our work and family schedule pretty interesting. Regardless, we’re super proud of both of our boys passing some pretty big milestones.
Baxter is 12 and just finished 6th grade, so he said good-bye to elementary school and gets ready for Middle School. I’m not crying, you’re crying.
Milo wrapped up Kindergarten and starts High School next year. Ok, maybe not, but if you knew this kid, that’s what it feels like. He’s a piece of work. I have no idea who he takes after. I AM crying…from fear of this little maniac. haha.
Now we’re in for a few months of fun in the sun!
COMICS, COMICS AND MORE COMICS!
I’ve been buried in best way lately. Buried under a mountain of comics I’m making with all the wonderful creators I’m lucky enough to collaborate with. I thought I’d drop some sneak peeks from the comics I’m working on.
I HATE FAIRYLAND
Brett Bean has been hard at work on the new ongoing series that will be hitting shelves from Image Comics. His cartooning is TOP FUCKING NOTCH and you’re going to love the energy and character he’s injecting into this book. The best thing is, he’s just starting! I can’t wait to see where else he takes the art as we both sink deeper into this wacky world!
Check out some of Brett’s awesome art below!
TWIG
Twig #1 is in stores now and the feedback from all of you has been AMAZING. Kyle and I are blown away by the response to our book and are so grateful for all your support, love and kind words.
Last week, I wrapped up writing on TWIG #5, which closes out our mini series. Kyle’s hard at work on art for the ending and it’s looking beautiful. Shout out to Jean-Francois Beaulieu and Nate Piekos on colors and lettering, as well as Joel Enos who has kept the train on the track from the Editor’s chair.
Here’s a few panels and covers from upcoming issues.
STRANGE ACADEMY
I just finished writing issue #20 (or #2 as you’ll see it on shelves after the re-launch.) This comic has been such a learning experience and an awesomely weird and fun puzzle to solve. I’ve fallen in love with these characters and I actually get mad at myself when I watch them making choices that I don’t want them to make, but realize they’re growing up and I have to let them be themselves. Weird, right? I mean, I write them…but do I? Most of the time I just sit down at the keyboard and feel like they are telling me what they’re going to do next.
Here’s some wonderful Humberto Ramos art from the next issue!
…AND OTHER STORIES
As I mentioned in a recent newsletter, I have the strip STUPID FRESH MESS appearing in the Image Comics 30th Anniversary Anthology each month. It’s a strip about me and my family and the oddities of life. We have some more Untold Tales Of I Hate Fairyland coming to your inbox soon from Morgan Beem, Dax Gordine, and one written by me with art by Aaron Conley! Stay tuned!
JUDGE A BOOK BY IT’S COVER
And here’s some covers I’ve done lately!
Well, that’s just A FEW things I’ve been up to in the last month. ha ha. I’m going to get back at it now! See ya next time!
Time Flies When You're Making Comics!
Congrats on making it through another school year! Time flies. Next thing you know you'll be where I am with a college and high school graduate at the same time. Crazy!
Love seeing updates for all the things you've been working on, especially Strange Academy (stop messing with precious Doyle!).
