Transformers meant a lot to me as a kid. It wasn’t just a cartoon and a line of toys that I loved. Transformers were one of first things that helped me learn to draw.
There were not stacks of paper laying around my house when I was 7 or 8. We did have a ton of coloring books and the inside covers were blank and perfect for drawing. I would often just copy a few of the drawings on the inside front and back cover and then move on to a new book with fresh white surfaces. One of the books I remember copying was RAMBO. Haha! That’s pretty funny if you think about it. Another one I remember was Smurfs! I was so proud of my copied Smurf drawings.
Every now and then I’d get my hands on one of my dad’s yellow legal sized notepads. They didn’t have the built in drawings to copy and I was getting tired of drawing the same things from the few cool coloring books I had. so I needed to find some new reference. It occurred me that I things all over my room I could draw. My toys.
My two favorite toys back then were He-Man and Transformers. I decided to start with Transformers. I got my paper, pencil, crayons, positioned my Optimus Prime, and started sketching away. At the time I thought it looked just like it but I’m sure it was SLIGHTLY off. Haha. I was inspired enough by my work to keep going and draw my other toys like He-Man, Mask, Sliver Hawks and Inspector Gadget.
So, Optimus Prime and the Transformers will always hold a special place in my heart for being my first still life drawing subject. And now, 40ish years later, I’m drawing Optimus Prime professionally. Life is weird and awesome.
P.S. I wrote this while watching The Toys That Made Made Us: Transformers.
