This was a really awesome read Skottie! Love these posts where you open up and reveal a part of yourself that none of us have ever seen. I can tell you I greatly appreciate you writing them!
So much of social media and the world today are the highlights of everyone's life. The successful book they wrote. The polished art they did. The new job promotion. And I love reading about all of that stuff! But going further past that to the struggles and trials we go through to get there is even more worthwhile!
This post feels especially fitting as I'm currently looking for more work in the game industry. Job application after job application. The occasional "we're not moving forward with your application" responses. Just hopefully waiting for that next interested party email to give me another chance to show I've got something to say. But rather then wait for that just continuing to make art on my iPad and become more comfortable with showing the "before" rather than just the "after".
Ooh I like that, B-roll material! I couldn't agree more with you Megan! I think I'm gonna start using that as a hash tag when I share my work hah. #b-roll material
And thanks Megan for the kind words, I greatly appreciate it!
You're absolutely welcome! And I'm glad you shared the post so we could get a chance to connect with it. It's east to forget but you're 100% right that we never stop learning and growing! Or at least we shouldn't ever STOP learning and growing. Thank you for the kind words!
This is so great! I’m working on several stories myself in a fictional universe I’ve created, and it keeps growing and getting larger. But I have the hardest time sitting down and actually putting it all on paper because of my own self-doubt. I’ve learned that if I just sit down and do it, some great stuff will come out. It’s that climb you have to go through that’s the hard part. Once you get over the hill of self-doubt and self-loathing, it just starts rolling and makes it all worth it.
Oh man, I'm trying to make my first comic right now and I'm glad that this is an issue that professionals went/go through as well. Thanks for sharing and making it clear that the important thing, at the end of the day, is to just do it!
It most certainly is something we've all been through and still go through. Growing is scary and hard but it's important and word all the big feelings. Good luck with you comic!
Same here. I think doubt must be part of the artistic process. I'm sure even Shakespeare at some point was writing when doubt struck. "To be, or...damn, I got nothing."
hahaha. For sure. It's a part of life really. "Am I good enough for...." you can fill in that blank with anything. The fun part of life is finding all the stuff that allows us to answer with a big ol' "YES, I AM!"
What an absolute delight to read. As someone who has a million story ideas and a million and one doubts about my ability to get it out on paper and out of my head, this could not be more timely. Re: me last night up until the wee hours trying to wrangle an essay about self confidence into making sense and being doubtful the whole time. Thank you for the vote of confidence!
I'm glad this connected with you. Each time we push through and just finish a thing, regardless of how "good" it is, we get to erase a few of those doubts. My buddy Jake Parker says FINISHED NOT PERFECT is much better that attempting to be perfect and never finished. I follow that thought too.
Sounds like the story was (is?) what happens on the climb itself. By the time the top was reached, the story had already happened, so no wonder there was nothing there to say from the top!
Regardless of metaphors, glad you found your path to telling your stories, and I am always looking forward to the next.
Funny how you can read things you subscribe to and realize the reason it feels like you are reading something of your own is because everyone feels similarly and that's ok.
The truest form of storytelling are ones that deal with the human experience. This would be a rad read! Thanks for allowing us a personal glimpse into the ride of SKOTTIE..... Keep CLIMBING!
Thanks for sharing Skottie 👍 When you climb you don’t always make it to the top on the first go. Failure makes the success all that much sweeter. I think we often all forget that. Failure is also how you measure it yourself. A story that is personal and only may ever be seen by you doesn’t make it a failure. You still told it! Get the pen to paper/screen and get making comics you all! Keen to hear and see your stories!

I loved this different perspective too! I think we all need to see less highlight roll and more B-roll material.
Keep busting on those gaming applications! Sending out all the crossed fingers and best luck.

Great point, MH! I've always loved your POV on that stuff. It's definitely one of the things that inspires me to pull back the curtain more.
Thank you, Tyler! I'm glad you connected with it. It's important to know we're ALWAYS on a journey of learning and growing. Good luck with your hunt!

The old saying THERE AIN'T NOTHING TO IT BUT TO DO IT still holds true!

It is a glorious mess, indeed. A...stupid fresh one at that. :)

It's a mind f for sure. haha. That's also the beauty of stories, we can see the different parts different ways. Thanks!
