What was my first break in the world of Super Heroes? It wasn’t Marvel Comics Iceman, my first comic ever that got mentioned in the news back in the day. It wasn’t my follow up mini series Spider-Man: Legend of the Spider-Clan, or Human Torch, or Venom, or New Warriors, or any of the things I’ve done at Marvel over the last 23 years. Nope, for that we have to go back…WAY BACK.
Over 30 years ago, 12 year old Skottie was on Summer Divorce Vacation. You know, the one you go on for 4-6 weeks during the summer if one of your parents lives far away from the other one. The kind of vacation where that parent isn’t used to parenting and they just lean into whatever you want and make you happy with video games, pizza, HBO and going to the movies whenever you want. Ahhhh, 80’s divorce vacations were the best! Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, 12 year old me!
I loved going to movies and would get dropped off pretty much every Friday during my SDV to see one of the new releases. June 23rd, 1989 was one of those Fridays. I was outside a theater in the longest line I had ever stood in and I was so excited. Everyone in line was just as excited because they were all about to be a part of history. They were about to walk in, sit down and watch BATMAN on the big screen. History was being made.
There was so much hype leading up to the Batman movie and the local news crews were there to cover the event. They walked the line asking random movie goers how they felt about going to see Batman on opening night and then, out of nowhere, they stopped at me.
HOLY SH!T!
There’s a camera on my 12 year old mug, a microphone in my face and the woman asks,“Are you excited to the see the movie tonight?” to which I rambled “ Oh yeah! I can’t wait to see it! It’s gonna be so good! Batman looks so cool and I think the Batmobile is super rad!” I mean, come on? Was I born for the spotlight or what? haha.
My interview ended up making in on the news and I felt famous as f**K! I made the news in line to watch Batman on June 23rd, 1989. Here’s the thing…I wasn’t. I mean, I was in line to see A movie on that day. Just not THAT movie. Nope. I wanted to, but the tickets were SOLD OUT!!! But I loved movies and there was another LITTLE movie that came out that day and I was in line to see that instead. Technically, I wasn’t lying on the news because I was excited to see Batman. I was just going to be seeing on a different day. On that historic comic book movie day, instead of Batman, I watched…
That’s right. And you know what… I LOVED IT!! I eventually saw Batman and loved it too. But for 12 year old Skottie Young, that day in 1989 will always be Honey, I Shrunk The Kids Day!
And that’s the story of the FIRST time Batman got me in the news.
