DUDE! I haven't been this excited for a Pixar film since Incredibles 2.
My theory: It's going to be played straight. Might even be in the Wall-e timeline.
Buzz is assigned a mission for a last ditch effort to save earth. He essentially has to send a message to the future and they've developed a way for him to go light-speed (crystal drives combined with ring shaped space-time amplifiers) and due to time dilation he's able to age much much slower than the rest of us on earth. He gets to the future and earth is uninhabited. Nature has reclaimed everything. Zerg and his robots have eliminated the human race and used up our energy resources and moved on to another planet (remember in the video game in TS2 there's a struggle for battery power?) Buzz is discovered by the last of the Space Rangers and this ragtag group of fighters head out to take down Zerg once and for all.
Character arc: Variation of Mr Incredible. He works alone, and needs to learn how to be a part of a team: The Space Rangers.
Jake, I love your idea and I just totally visualized that playing out in my head! Ahhh, I'm sooo pumped! And Disney Marketing for the win on releasing it on Father's Day weekend. Smart Move.
Skottie, you feel free to talk about whatever you please! Movies, music, games, etc. I love comics but love what other media you ingest that influences your comics! Buzz was always my favorite character from the series and I can't wait for this movie! I love that your family talks about how excited they are for it and your oldest giving it an 8 hah.
I'm listening to your audio right now but my theory is pretty boring haha. I honestly think this is the movie that influences the Buzz Lightyear toy. This is going to be the original astronauts story that inspires the Buzz we see in the Toy Story movie. Wow!! Just finished your audio and what a gut punch of a theory! Thought I balled my eyes out with three but that would be a crazy ending. I really liked the super crazy twist I read online that Buzz in the movie get's sucked into some kind of black hole and awakens as a toy hah.
Also, if they in NO WAY include Pizza Planet and the aliens, I'm gonna riot! It's literally my favorite fictional franchise out of any movie series period. I have a full on Pizza Planet delivery cosplay I do.
Also also, I've had this really awesome idea to get the Space Ranger logo that is on his shoulder as a tattoo. But done in the style of a sticker that is peeling up.
That seems to be the prevailing theory. But I just can't see Pixar being that straight forward. Also the tech and and sci fi aspect of it honest line up with the Toy Story Timeline in my opinion.
It's definitely interesting as I agree! A movie like this and the way the first trailer plays out I don't see there not being a twist of some kind. But at the same time coming from the Toy Story movies they were all pretty straight forward. There was never really a twist. But I think and hope you're right, that there's something that happens that none of us are expecting.
OH SNAP! Ok, I just got a great idea for a twist kind of bouncing off your idea of Andy being in the theater watching it. What if it's a movie directed by Andy! We know he went off to college, yet we don't know what he went to college for. What if he went to an art school of some kind, eventually became a director, and wanted to tell the tale of one of his favorite toys growing up. That would also play up with another great idea somebody online have of getting a super sick western flick style movie for Woody that's in a similar vein to the Lightyear movie!
Hey Skottie! Definitely with you on how pumped I am after watching it multiple times, and I can't wait to share it with my fam, my kids are going to flip out!
Anyway, I like your theory, and think that would be super dope! My theory is not too far off yours, but, instead of (post credit scene) Andy walking out of the theater with his kids, it's Andy as a kid coming out of the theater with his mom and his friends for his birthday all bright-eyed and amp'd out of their minds saying their favorite scenes, totally nerding out. The shot pulls out to all of them piling in the minivan and Andy's mom says something like "who's up for some yummy food and presents back at the house?!!", and all of the kids yell "Yeeessssssss, sweet!!", and then Andy says, "Mom, can we order Pizza Planet...pllleeeeaaasse?", she says "I know that's your favorite, and think I can make that happen." As the camera continues to pull out and fade to black, you hear one of the kids yell (in their best Buzz voice) "To infinity and beyond!". End Credits.
Pumped for this as well! I think your theory and someone else's down in the comments about it being a movie Andy sees as a kid are rock solid. Can we all agree though that Chris Evans is the king of not finishing catch phrases? Anyway yeah, super stoked for this. Have an awesome day.
Pausing to say - I presumed that either this is the TV show that the toyline is based upon. Or these are the memories that are placed in the mind of every Buzz Lightyear as they are created, conjured by the backstory printed on each toy, or comic book that accompanies it. Maybe the fanfic that is created, all swirling round in the reality ether. Okay, now to find out what you said...
Possibly. The tech and Toy Story timeline bother me about that. This would have been a 90's TV show. Either way, i'm so fucking excited! Thanks for sharing you thoughts, Rich!
Commenting before I hear your thought... My play on the movie, he tests out this new power source and when the rocket is used it transports him to a parallel toy universe where he is now a buzz lightyear toy when he tries to travel home!!
I did the pause and comment method, so interested in hearing your theory in a minute. I like to imagine that this movie exists in the world of the Toy Story universe. So Andy would have grown up watching this movie, and got the toy based on it. So I think the movie will definitely contain some form or emperor Zurg.
This seems like Pixar’s own Quentin Tarantino type film. :)
Yoooo! I am digging your theory!! After listening and reading some of the other comments, I could see this being the life and adventures of Buzz Lightyear, that inspired the toy line that we see in Toy Story. I really feel you on Andy leaving a theatre with his kids talking about Buzz, just to hit you in the feels!!! Have a great day bro, much luv from Texas!!
Wow, thank you for sharing! I didnt even know this was in development! First off all of the goosebumps and nostalgia from my childhood just flowing in and I am not sure I will get through my work day with the cliffhanger of not getting to hear Buzz say "and beyond." If I was going to guess the story line as I have only seen the trailer and watched nothing has something to do with searching for alternate fuel sources as there was a focus on the fuel cell at the beginning and then we see him on "Buzz Lightyear Dagobah." I also feel he's probably fresh out of the academy and is ready to make his mark with star command and space. I watched a bit of the cartoon from 2000, but was 12 at the time and was transitioning to more mature content like Daria, but I felt that show is what the kids in Toy Story would have watched to pitch them all of the toys, and I am hoping this movie is a bigger What If of what if buzz was real and there was a real star command and this is a separate world. Regardless I hope I can get my kids juiced up on space and toy story over the next 6 months and have them watch the trailer 1000 times instead of toy unboxing videos. Also I wish I could invest in Buzz's cat the robot Furby Flerken as I bet it will be one of the number one toys along with Buzz Lighter Christmas 2022. Regardless thanks for the thoughts and post and looking forward to hearing what you think as I paused the recording. SFM forever!!!
I really like your theory. I was thinking that this is a prequel to the first story. A movie on the real life Buzz Lightyear that inspired the toy line.

Just spitballin' here.
Dude, you were the first person I thought of when I saw it

Love you're theory

hahaha. yeah, the Director thing was in our talks here in the office too. or an animator. haha.
Well great minds think alike hah. Ooh wow I really like the idea of him as an animator!

Buzz whips around the sun and gets transported to a universe where he's a toy
I raised my Daughter on Pixar, excited to see Chris Evans and Buzz sticking around

I'm so excited for this! I'm a big Buzz Lightyear fan. I've been collecting buzz things for years and cannot wait to see this!

Forgot to say no sign of Zurg and I bet he makes it in the end credit scene for BuzzLightyear 2: Terror at Star Command
Well the Toy could easily be pulled from Existing Media (fictional of course), but to Base it off a Real Dude would be cool.
