I’ll join the crowd that enjoys these stories of life changing moments. We are all looking for connection with others. In a small way, stories of our growth and taking risks show us the common human experiences that we all share. Bingo - we are reminded we are not so different from each other. Yes, our experiences are different, much different. But our emotions and thoughts are very much the same. Thanks for taking the time to write it, ask your friend to photograph his tattoo, and post it today. :) peace, maka
I love hearing stories about the evolution of an artist, and seeing early work. Randomly enough though, what sticks out to me about your story is that you had a CRX. My mom had one, and that was definitely a little ass car!
I love as always getting to glimpse into your past but through your own eyes and experience! It's always that idea of being a fly on the wall for moments like this. And I'd absolutely love to be that fly! Not only to see such a pivotal moment in the beginnings of your career. But also just how excited you were! The fact you not only took his advice but literally went home, adjusted pieces and went back? That's true passion right there!
Thank you as always for being such a big inspiration! And for sharing your stories and early art here. At some point I need to go through and archive it so I'll always have it with me to look at!
I'd love to hear more about your DJ days as ELEMYNT as that sounds dope hah! I can relate with always having to come up with fun names. Which is how I got my name I use now for all my social media and art, Lowpology. Being a 3D artist I accidently combined the words low and topology in talking to my college professor. Immediately knew it was perfect haha.
Or better yet the name for my senior thesis game project I called environMENTAL haha. About a city hit by a weird meteorite causing buildings, street signs, garbage bins, etc. to come to life but are also evil. You play as the statue of Muscle Mac, the towns dopey hero who has to save the day!
Fantastic! Ever run into Charles Vess back then? He lived/lives in Abingdon. Can’t wait to tell folks you grew up nearby. My son will be super excited. You signed a book for him when he was 10 years old at Heroes Con and talked to him about art. Very generous!
I did run into Charles back then. He'd be up a the shop when i was there from time to time. Eventually, after I had long moved away, I would meet and get to go to hang out in his studio in Abington.
The Appalachian in me loves this sidebar! Filmmaker Scott Cooper graduated with me at Abingdon High. Really proud that such incredible creatives have come out of our region. Jealous you and Charles Vess have hing out! And thank you for your replies and generosity!
Love this story and that you are always giving credit to all of those folks that had helped you in the past and gave you a chance or gave you that lesson. Really cool thanks for sharing this!!
Immediately places order for new doorplate... “the Office of ELEMYNT”.
Seriously, this is such a good and important SY backstory!
Yyeesss please do!
Great newsletter Skottie. The only part of drawing comics (I wasn't that good at it) that I sometimes still miss is inking with a brush.
Thanks Ed! I loved when I finally was brave enough to start using the brush!

We called it the Micro Machine. I'm 6'4 so you'd think it'd be too small. But honestly, is was a 2 seater so it was ALL LEGROOM haha.
This was such a great read. Thank you for taking the time and sharing this with us.

Fascinating, nice!
This was an awesome read!
What a great story, thank you for sharing it.
POD has some beautiful songs, and your drawings are great!
You lived in Bristol? JC? Awesome!
I lived in Bristol for about 7 years. 8th grade until few years after high school. Basically grew up on comics from Mountain Empire
